“College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn’t need a college diploma to have economic security.” — Kent Walker, Google’s Sr. VP

Google Introduces Its New 6-Month Career Certificates

Would high school students prefer to enroll in a 6-month Google technology course for $49/month geared toward a particular career or, enroll in a 4-year College or University program costing a total of 5–6 figures?

Not everyone can make the entrance grade.

Not everyone can afford a good education.

“College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn’t need a college diploma to have economic security,” writes Kent Walker, senior VP of global affairs at Google in the company announcement.

“We need new, accessible job-training solutions — from enhanced vocational programs to online education — to help America recover and rebuild,” he said, noting the certificates as good as a college degree in Google’s eyes.

“In our own hiring, we will now treat these new career certificates as the equivalent of a four-year degree for related roles,” Walker tweeted in introducing the Google Career Certificates.

While some professional post secondary programs require 4+ years to complete, there are specific careers which can be learned in a condensed 3–6 month period for a fraction of the cost, as well, students can jump start their careers earlier than those who take the traditional educational route.

Companies like Google, Microsoft and other tech companies are taking the lead to bridge the Technology Gap by offering specialized training to help students begin their careers faster with a low investment. As well, Tech Companies realize that traditional educational institutions are slow to change in a highly technical world.

Grow With Google offers:

  • Courses that takes 3–6 months to complete
  • No previous experience required
  • Entirely developed by Google
  • Grants and scholarships will be available
  • Hosted on Coursera, taught by Google Staff

Google offers a few Tech courses on Coursera with a 4.7 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 review and over 100,000+ students enrolled.

Later Google will offer 3 additional technology courses and this list will no doubt continue to grow to meet the employment demands of the future:

1. Data Analyst

2. Project Management

3. UX Designer

Would you enroll in a 4-year degree program or a 3–6 month program geared for a specific career?

Closing Thoughts . . .

“College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn’t need a college diploma to have economic security,” writes Kent Walker, senior VP of global affairs at Google in the company announcement.

With today’s high cost of education and rapidly changing technology, Google is bridging the gap by offering relevant technology training to prepare students to start their careers sooner rather that 4 years later.

To support the country’s economic recovery post COVID-19, Google has launched their 6-month Career Certificates which is equivalent to a 4-year college degree, according to Google Senior VP of Global Affairs, Kent Walker

Would companies prefer to hire someone with a Google Career Certificate or a 4-Year College or University degree?
